Documents and Records Requests

Many document concerning the service of Civil War Veterans (including Civil War Pension Records and Civil War Military Service Records) are available online at such sites as Ancestry.com; Fold3.com; and FamilySearch.com. The first two are subscription sites; however, many public libraries have access to those sites free of charge to the user. Be sure to look for images of the actual records, not lists and internet indexes. If you do not find the records online, they can be ordered from the National Archives as covered below.

Obtaining Civil War Veteran Pension Records

If you are interested in obtaining official copies of a Civil War Veterans Pension Files, you can do so, by completing the National Archives Trust Fund Board (NATF) Form 85, National Archives Order for Copies of Federal Pension or Bounty Land Warrant Applications.  The form is very self-explanatory and mailing instructions are included on the form as well.  An example of a completed form can be found HERE.  You can also download a blank/fillable NATF Form 85, on the page as well.

Obtaining Civil War Veteran Military Service Records

If you are interested in obtaining official copies of a Civil War Veterans Military Service Files, you can do so, by completing the National Archives Trust Fund Board (NATF) Form 86, National Archives Order for Copies of Military Service Records.  The form is very self-explanatory and mailing instructions are included on the form as well.  An example of a completed form can be found HERE.  You can also download a blank/fillable NATF Form 86, on the page as well.

Obtaining a Civil War Veteran Headstone

If you are interested in obtaining an official Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)-provided headstone, for a deceased Civil War Veteran, you can do so, by completing the VA Form 40-1330, Claim for Standard Government Headstone or Marker.  The form is very self-explanatory and mailing instructions are included on the form as well.  An example of a completed form can be found HERE.  You can also download a blank/fillable VA Form 40-1330, on this page as well.
